One screen for all of it. Your team as a card in its colours: where it's expected to finish, where it's strong, its best players and its opening night. Beside it, how long the season runs, how many teams make the playoffs, a single season or a franchise that goes on for years, and the rules. Bring friends: each person on the couch runs a team of their own.

Skip ahead to your next game, the end of the week, the trade deadline, the playoffs or the end of the season. It tells you how many days that is and how many of your games are on the way, and it stops if someone gets hurt or a trade offer comes in.

Where you stand

Standings, the way the NHL does them

By division, wild card, conference or the whole league, with every column you'd expect and a line where the playoffs cut off. Teams that have clinched or been knocked out get marked as soon as it's certain.

Ten leader boards

Points, goals, assists, plus-minus, ice time, hits, blocks, save percentage, wins and shutouts, each with your team's best player at the bottom so you know where you stand.

Three lines, three defence pairs and your goalies, each player shown as a card. Pick someone up and drop them somewhere else to swap, lock a spot so the auto-lines leave it alone, or let the coach set the whole thing.

Trade offers waiting on you, the players on your trade block, which teams are buying and selling, and when the deadline is. In a franchise there's also your payroll against the cap, free agents, the next draft class and an owner who's watching.

Haggle at the table

Put players on and take them off and watch the other team's answer change as you go, from “no chance” to "deal!". Not quite there? Make it work adds the least it would take. A deal they offered says Deal until you change it.
